Make a complete backup

A typical WordPress site needs both its files and its database for a full restore. Include uploads, themes and plugins, keep the backup in a protected location separate from the live site, and confirm how you would restore it. Backup scope and tools vary by service.

Prepare before making changes

Take a current backup before updating WordPress, themes or plugins. Review compatibility and release information, and use a staging copy when practical. Decide who can restore the previous state if an update fails.

Update and check

Use trusted sources for WordPress, themes and plugins. After updates, test the homepage, key pages, forms, sign-in and any checkout or integration that matters to your site. If something breaks, capture the error and seek help before making repeated changes.

Make recovery a routine

Choose a backup frequency suited to how often your content changes. Periodically test a restore in a safe environment and keep a record of the outcome. Do not assume that a backup exists or is included in a particular hosting product without checking its terms.
