A practical checklist for the moments before—and after—you point your domain at a new website.
Confirm that you can access the domain registrar, DNS provider and hosting account. Record the existing DNS settings. Take a current copy of site files and databases, and confirm that you know how to restore it.
Check the application configuration and required runtime. Test important pages, navigation, forms, uploads and sign-in using a suitable preview method. Remove test accounts or sample content that should not be public.
A website move does not automatically move email. Preserve the correct mail routing records unless an email move is part of the plan. Check incoming and outgoing delivery after any DNS change.
Make the agreed DNS changes and allow for cached records to expire. Check the site from more than one connection, verify secure access and test the main customer journey again. Keep the previous environment available until you are confident in the result.
Record who handles updates, backups, renewals and support. Keep a separate recoverable backup and review it periodically. If an issue appears, capture the exact error and change history before asking for help.
